The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is one of Atlanta’s most popular attractions. It presents opportunities to explore our planet, its people and cultures. The museum offers a number of permanent exhibits as well as special exhibits held throughout the year.
One of the most popular permanent exhibits is Mesozoic Giants, which is located in the Great Hall. The exhibit features replica fossil casts of some of the largest dinosaurs that ever lived. These fossil remains were found in Patagonia, Argentina. Another permanent exhibition is entitled A walk through time in Georgia. Theatrical performances and displays tell the natural history of Georgia along with the development of planet Earth. Tea feel the nature The exhibit shows how we use our senses to interpret the environment around us. The most recent permanent exhibition is nature questan interactive children’s exhibit that allows young visitors to become explorers, scientists and adventurers as they discover the natural world around them.
Fernbank currently hosts two special exhibits. Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns and Mermaids It will be open until August 14, 2011. This exhibit shows how many cultures around the world have created mythical creatures to explain the world around them. The other exhibition Seascapes – Photograph by Sandra Gottlieb features 40 beautiful, large-scale photographs. It will be on display until August 7.
Fernbank visitors can also enjoy the opportunity to experience IMAX Theater performances. The museum programs two 45-minute films that alternate every hour. Two additional films are shown only on Friday nights at the museum’s Martinis and IMAX events. All of these shows are for the whole family.
Outside the museum is Fernbank Forest, 65 acres of woodland that can be explored. Visitors can glimpse turtles, snakes, and many species of birds as they stroll through mature hardwood forests. Less adventurous visitors can enjoy a stroll through the rose garden, which blooms from early spring to late fall.
The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road, just east of downtown Atlanta. Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Martinis and IMAX events on Friday nights are held from 6:30 pm to 11 pm
Admission to the museum is only $15 for adults, $14 for seniors and students with ID, and $13 for ages 3-12. IMAX tickets can be purchased separately, and combination museum and IMAX tickets are available. Martinis and IMAX admission is $12 for adults. Parking is free. The Fernbank Museum Store offers educational gifts, science kits, and jewelry. The Fernbank Cafe serves sandwiches, soups and pizzas. Fernbank is the perfect place to learn about the natural history of our world, experience incredible IMAX theater performances, and enjoy activities and special events.
